Pork Egg Roll Recipe FAQs
Pork egg rolls are typically wrapped in egg roll wrappers that contain gluten. However, gluten-free wonton wrappers may be used to make gluten-free egg rolls. Make sure to also use gluten-free soy sauce or tamari in place of regular soy sauce if preparing gluten-free egg rolls.
Egg rolls are wrapped in a thick, crispy wrapper that has been dipped in eggs before frying. Spring rolls use rice or flour wrappers that are thinner than egg roll wrappers, and no egg. Their fillings typically vary from one another, as well, but the biggest difference is in their wrappers.
Use ground pork for quick and easy egg rolls as in these air fryer egg rolls, or chopped Chinese roast pork (char siu) for more traditional pork egg rolls.

- Add olive oil to a saucepan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add sesame seeds and toast them until they are golden-brown.
- Add ground pork to the pan and cook until browned. Season with onion powder, black pepper, and ground ginger. Mix in chopped green onions, minced garlic, white wine vinegar, and soy sauce, and cook until the juices evaporate.
- Mix in coleslaw. Cook so the slaw softens and stir through until combined.
- Lay egg roll wrappers out on a clean surface in the position of a diamond. Spoon 2-3 spoonfuls of ground pork filling in the center. Make sure not to over-stuff the rolls, or they will break when frying.
- Lightly wet the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the left and right corners towards the center.
- Fold the bottom corner up, then roll the egg rolls shut, squeezing any air out as you roll them.
- Lightly wet the exposed corner to press it down and seal the egg roll.
- Spray the air fryer basket with oil, then place the egg rolls in the basket. Spray the egg rolls with oil.
- Fry pork egg rolls at 380°F for 8 minutes until they are crispy and golden-brown on all sides. Let cool for 5-10 minutes, then serve and enjoy!

How to Make Egg Rolls (Pan-Frying)
- Follow the above steps up to step 7 to prepare your filling and wrap the egg rolls.
- When ready to fry, add enough oil to a deep pan to cover the egg rolls halfway and heat over medium-high heat.
- Once hot, add the egg rolls and pan-fry until crispy and golden-brown on all sides, about 7 minutes.
- Remove with tongs and drain on paper towels or a baking rack over paper towels.
You can also deep-fry egg rolls by adding 2-3 inches of oil to a deep pot, then heating it to high heat (350-375°F). Fry until golden brown and crispy all over. Carefully remove with tongs and drain on paper towels or a baking rack.

Egg Rolls Recipe Tips
- You can find egg roll wrappers in the produce section near bottled salad dressings and sauces in most grocery stores.
- Be sure not to overcrowd your air fryer basket or pan when frying. Give the egg rolls enough room to cook evenly. Cook in batches if needed.
Make-Ahead Egg Rolls
To make pork egg rolls ahead of time, pre-roll them, then store them in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours. Place in an airtight container with a damp rag over the top to prevent them from becoming soggy overnight.

Freezing Egg Rolls
- You can freeze homemade egg rolls by preparing the filling and sealing them, then adding them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Leaving them uncooked, add them to the freezer until frozen solid. When frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag and label with the date. Store for 1-2 months.
Reheating Egg Rolls
- You can reheat egg rolls in the air fryer by spraying them with oil on both sides, then frying at 350°F for 5 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Reheat egg rolls on the stove in a pan over medium heat until heated through.
- Or, reheat egg rolls in the microwave. Place a damp paper towel in the microwave with the egg rolls to keep them crisp.
