Pineapple Ham Glaze

My pineapple ham glaze is a holiday tradition in my household and is always a hit around the dinner table! The sweet flavor of this glaze perfectly balances out savory ham, and gives it beautifully caramelized sticky edges.

Loaded with pineapple juice, fresh chopped pineapple, brown sugar, and simple spices, this easy pineapple glaze recipe creates an unforgettable holiday dinner with ham. You can enjoy it on boneless ham, spiral ham, or ham steaks!

Pair this easy ham glaze recipe with canned pineapple rings and even maraschino cherries for extra sweetness, and you will have the most gorgeous pineapple glazed ham, perfect for Christmas dinner, Thanksgiving, or Easter.

Pineapple Glaze Ingredients

  • fresh pineapple
  • pineapple juice
  • cinnamon powder
  • cloves
  • light brown sugar
  • butter

For glaze, I recommend using fresh pineapple for flavor, because the acidity is lowered when you cook it down. However, don't place fresh pineapple slices on the ham itself, or it will ruin the texture of the meat when you bake it. Use canned pineapple when placing slices directly on the surface of the ham.

How to Make Pineapple Ham Glaze

  1. Add freshly chopped pineapple and pineapple juice in a large skillet over medium heat. Mix together well.
  2. Sprinkle in brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. Mix together well and continue cooking until your glaze begins to lightly boil.
  3. Once the glaze is at a light boil, turn the heat low. Simmer for another 10 minutes, or until the glaze has thickened.
  4. Add in butter to finish off the glaze, and mix well until fully melted.
  5. Use pineapple ham glaze immediately or store it in the refrigerator.

Pineapple Ham Glaze Recipe Tips

  • Make-Ahead Ham Glaze: I love preparing ham glaze ahead of time, and it's so easy to do! It lasts in the fridge for up to 2 weeks! Be sure to reheat leftover glaze on the stovetop in a small saucepan (depending on how much you are reheating) or microwave for 2-3 minutes before using, and stir.
  • If you have any leftover pineapple sauce for ham, don't throw it out! Brush any remaining glaze over leftover ham slices to make it as delicious as the night before.
  • For the best results, I recommend using fresh pineapple juice. You can also use orange juice in place of pineapple juice if you like.
  • You can use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar if you like, but the molasses flavor of the sugar will be stronger if you do.
  • This glaze works for boneless ham, bone-in ham, spiral ham, and ham leftovers. It is so good when brushed on slices for ham sandwiches or when lightly mixed with diced ham for casseroles. I recommend making a little extra to have for later!

Storing Ham Glaze

  • Refrigerator: Use glaze immediately or store any ham glaze in an airtight container placed in your fridge for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer: Easily freeze any leftover ham glaze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Before using, thaw completely and reheat.

Ham Pineapple Glaze FAQs

Can I use orange juice instead of pineapple juice for ham?

Orange juice can be used in place of pineapple juice in this pineapple glaze recipe for a slightly different but amazing flavor. Follow the same instructions as you would for using pineapple juice.

At what point do you glaze a ham?

You should glaze a ham a little before cooking, during the cooking process, and once your ham is finished cooking. Some recipes will warn you not to glaze the ham before baking it as it may burn, but if you wrap the ham in foil and only take it off towards the end of the roasting process to caramelize the outside, it will not burn.
