How to Make Loaded Baked Potatoes
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. While it's heating, scrub, rinse, and dry the potatoes. Wrap each potato with 1-2 slices of bacon, overlapping the slices to account for shrinkage.
- Secure the bacon in place with as many toothpicks as it takes, then place the wrapped potatoes on a wire rack on top of a baking sheet.
- Bake the wrapped potatoes for 55-60 minutes, until the potatoes can be easily pierced with a fork and the bacon is crispy. Remove, let cool for 10 minutes, then remove the toothpicks.
- Cut a slit at the top of each potato, then push on the ends to open them for stuffing!
- Fill each potato with butter, cheese, and sliced onions, plus any other chosen toppings. Serve, and enjoy!
Loaded Baked Potato Recipe Tips
- Make sure to use a wire rack. This will keep the potato out of the collected bacon grease, letting it crisp up beautifully.
- Always cut the potatoes open right away once they've cooled, or else they can overcook from trapped steam.
- Only use regular American bacon for this recipe, not thick cut! Thick cut won't crisp up correctly and can turn out chewy and unpleasant.
- Your oven might run hot, so check the potatoes right at the 55 minute mark to make sure they don't get dry.
- Instead of wrapping it in bacon, why not try serving it with my Million Dollar Bacon on top?
Loaded Potato Recipe FAQs
Potatoes baked at 350°F will take about one hour to fully cook, depending on the size of the potato. Make sure to fork check them to make sure they're tender and cooked before removing them from the oven
While cooking potatoes wrapped in foil can be slightly faster, it isn't recommended! Wrapping them in foil means that the steam won't escape, leading to dense, mushy potatoes. Leaving them unwrapped will ensure the crispy outside and fluffy inside of a perfect baked potato!
A classic loaded baked potato is topped with cheese, a meat of some sort, sour cream or another cream-based sauce, and herbs! I like serving mine with bacon, chili, cheddar, sour cream, chives, and bleu cheese dressing, depending on what it's being paired with.
